Meet the Sheep! Praxis Natural Dye Garden Community Demo
July 6 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pmFree
Praxis Fiber Workshop will be partnering with the Urban Lambscape Project to host 4 sheep to “mow” the lot and fertilize the soil. Urban Lambscape Project has been bringing sheep to urban lots as a way of educating the public on sustainable land maintenance and allowing farming practices to be integrated into urban settings since 2012. The sheep that live on the Praxis lot will be part of a program to educate the public about cultivating fibers for clothing, as most people take this process for granted. As the sheep are sheared seasonally, Praxis will take those raw fibers and process them ourselves during community demonstrations and workshops.
One of those most damaging effects of wool processing is water waste. Wool must be washed multiple times to remove the dirt particles and lanolin before it can be used as yarn. We believe there is a way to clean the fibers without using so much water. We are currently working on the prototype of a rainwater collection system that would collect rainwater and simultaneously clean the wool fibers. This low budget plan made mostly of PVC piping would spread the water to the dye garden once it has passed through the sheared wool fibers.
